How long does it take to do the survey?
- If you choose to talk about one (1) book or series, the survey will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
- If you choose to talk about two (2) books or series (the maximum) the survey will take approximately 30 to 35 minutes.
Note! It's not possible to change which books/series you selected once you’ve started. If you change your mind, you can simply leave the questions for one of your choices blank and still submit your responses for the first series.
What will the questions be about?
The survey asks about:
- The mentoring relationship (who is the mentor, who is being mentored?)
- Parts you found interesting, confusing, or memorable, or something alike
- Your personal opinions, interpretations, and reading experiences
Any lessons or takeaways (or none!) from the stories, characters, and relationships
What type of questions are included? Open-ended, closed, or other?
The survey includes:
- open-ended questions, where you can write your own answer
Closed, scale-based questions, such as “Completely agree” to “Completely disagree” or “Very positive” to “Very negative”
Can I do the survey on my phone?
Yes. The Qualtrics survey is mobile friendly. You can do the survey in a computer, tablet, or phone.
Can I look things up while doing the survey?
Yes. If you want to quickly check a character name, a plot detail, or something you don’t fully remember, that’s totally fine. The survey is not a test. It’s about your experiences and interpretations, not your memory.
Can I skip questions?
Yes. After the mandatory information and consent sections, there is one more required question (your age again). Everything else is optional. You can skip any question you want.
What if I interpret the text differently than others?
That's completely fine. There are no right or wrong answers. Your unique thoughts, experiences, and interpretations are valuable, even – or maybe even especially – if they differ from ‘common’ or traditional readings.
Will anyone judge my writing or my grammar?
No. The focus is on your ideas and reactions, not writing quality.
Do I have to do an interview if I do the survey?
No. The interview is optional.
At the end of the survey, you can choose whether you want more information about the interview and whether you want to leave your contact details. That still doesn’t mean you must participate in an interview.
Can I pause the survey and come back later?
Yes, but ONLY if you return on the same device in the same browser within 7 days. If you switch devices, use a different browser, or return after 7 days, your responses will have automatically been deleted and you will need to restart if you want to participate.
Can I change my answers after submitting?
No. Once submitted, you can’t edit your responses.
However, you can ask us to withdraw your entire response within 7 days of completion. Email us at readingmentors@ugent.be with your unique 5-digit ID code, which you receive (and should copy!) at the end of the survey. This code allows us to identify and delete your response.
What if I change my mind about my data/responses being used in the study?
Email us at readingmentors@ugent.be with the unique 5-digit ID code you received (and copied!) at the end of the survey. We will delete your data, no questions asked. Without this code, we cannot identify which response is yours.
